SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara center Drew Edelman has signed a contract to play professional basketball for A.S. Ramat Hasharon, a Division 1 professional team in Ramat Hasharon, Israel, a suburb of Tel Aviv.
Edelman had a standout season for the Gauchos in 2017-18 as she led the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game and rebounds at 9.6 per game. She was among the Big West Conference leaders in both categories, as well as field goal percentage at 57.0%. Following the year, the Sunnyvale, Calif., native was named First Team All-Big West.
"I am very thankful to UCSB athletics, our Gaucho community and especially the coaching staff for the past two years," Edelman said. "To get an opportunity to play professional basketball and continue to play a sport I love is a dream come true. I can't wait to get over to Israel and continue my career."
In 2016-17, her first season at UCSB, Edelman averaged 11.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game and was a second team all-league choice. That season, she helped lead the Gauchos to the Big West Tournament championship game.
The 6-foot-4 Edelman played her first two seasons at USC, where she redshirted one season and graduated with honors in three years. Upon her graduation, she transferred to UCSB to attend the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, where she will earn her master's degree in June.
Edelman's foray to Israel will not be her first. In July of 2017, she represented the United States at the Maccabi Games. She led the Team USA to the gold medal and was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, averaging 24.6 points per game. In the semifinal and championship, Edelman averaged 29.5 points and 18.5 rebounds, including a 29-point, 19-rebound performance against the host team, Israel, in the title game.
