UCSB Set for Big West Conference Track and Field Championships

Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara Track and Field will be sending their men's and women's teams down to Los Angeles where they will be competing at the 2018 edition of the Big West Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Cal State Northridge. With a handful of encounters from UCSB's conference adversaries throughout the season, the Gauchos will finally square off against all nine Big West teams over the course of two days to determine who will be taking home this year's team titles. The meet will take place starting Friday May 11th with the preliminary rounds and will continue through to Saturday May 12th for the finals.

Meet Preview

The 2017 edition of the Conference Track Championships resulted in UCSB placing in the upper half of the team scorings on both sides, the men scoring 117 points for fourth place and the women scoring 128.4 points for third. Both teams were less than 20 points away from team title crowns, showing how critical the placings can be in the grand scheme of the championship meet. For 2018, the Gauchos have engaged in three Big West only competitions (the UC Riverside/Cal Poly Tri-Meet, the Big West Challenge, and the Cal Poly dual), the men having only lost to Cal State Fullerton so far at the Big West Challenge. The women suffered a one point loss at the Tri-Meet to Cal Poly back in March but have since then remained undefeated against Big West competition, having won the Big West Challenge for the third year in a row and getting the runback on Cal Poly at the home dual meet just two weeks ago.

The Gauchos have already started off on a good note at the Big West Conference Multi-Event portion of the championships with JR Hope Bender scoring ten points by winning the heptathlon for the women along with FR Sam Pica and JR Aaron Cheek scoring a combined three points by taking seventh and eighth place in the decathlon for the men. UC Davis leads both the team scorings for the championships after taking 22 points in the decathlon and 11 in the heptathlon, with UCSB just behind on the women's side in second place.
