Nov. 9, 2005
The Gaucho Cross Country squads will be traveling to the NCAA West Regional Championships this Saturday, November 12th. Hosted by Stanford University, the meet serves as a springboard to the NCAA National Championships to be held in Terre Haute, IN on Nov. 21st.
This is UCSB's 2nd trip to Stanford's campus golf course in 2005 after both teams had strong showings on September 24th at the Stanford Invitational (Men's Recap- Women's Recap). This time around at Stanford, both will go up against the top teams in the West, coming from Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada and Washington. The top two teams in each race will earn automatic bids to the thirty-one team field at the National Championships. Thirteen at-large teams from all nine regions will also be selected by an NCAA committee to represent their University at NCAA's in Terre Haute. The top four individuals not on qualifying teams in each region will be the final qualifiers along with two other at-large individuals from across the country.
The men are slated to race first in the 10,000 meter race, toeing the line at 11am with the women following suit at 12:15pm racing the 6,000m distance. The Men are currently ranked 7th in a deep West Region which currently has six teams ranked nationally in the top 30. With Big West Conference Champion, Chris Ashley (Jr.) and two other All-Conference finishers they still hold an outside shot at making the National Championship field. The Men last qualified in 2001 when they finished 17th in the Country. The Women go into the Regional Championships unranked after finishing 3rd in the West in 2004 and 17th in the Country. The women are without four of their top women from 2004 due to red-shirting. Bethany Nickless (Jr.) and Seanna Martin (Sr.) go in after Big West All-Conference finishes two weeks ago.
