SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UCSB cross country's Crystal Reed has been named the UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week after leading the Gauchos to their fifth Big West team championship in the last seven years.
Reed's time of 20:43.5 on the six-kilometer UC Riverside Agricultural Operations course earned her fourth place and All-Conference honors. It marked the first time that Reed had competed in the Conference Championships.
She finished five seconds ahead of Amanda Moreno, who was also competing in the Championships for the first time. Breanne Strenkowski took ninth with a time of 21:06.9 and Katie Voigtlander rounded out the top-ten in 21:07.7. All three also picked up All-Conference honors.
Reed, a junior college transfer out of Fountain Valley, won two consecutive California State Championships while at Orange Coast College, and was also a two-time conference champion.
Reed returns to the racetrack at the NCAA West Regional in Eugene, Ore. on Nov. 14th, hosted by the University of Oregon.
Earlier this year UCSB Athletics unveiled the BE Great initiative. BE Great is dedicated to maximizing leadership ability, strong on-campus interaction, and general welfare for all 450 student-athletes and Intercollegiate Athletics staff at UC Santa Barbara. BE Great also focuses on personal and career development, diversity, and social awareness, along with ensuring academic success. UCSB has a 92% student-athlete graduation rate.
With the arrival of Mark Massari as Athletics Director in October, UCSB Athletics launched the Gauchos Give community outreach initiative for all 450 athletes and 20 sports. Gaucho athletes give back to their community through free clinics, helping families during the holidays, providing financial and emotional support during tragedies, and touching the lives of youth groups.
