RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Danielle Domenichelli captured the Big West women's cross country individual title, finishing the 6k race in 20:09. This is the third-straight year that a Gaucho has claimed the women's individual title, as Megan Lewis won last year's race and Lauren Christman won in 2006.
Domenichelli was initially in the front with a large group of runners, which started to break apart as the race wore on. She managed to stay with the leaders and out-kick UC Irvine's Laura Olvera in the final 400 meters to win the title.
Scott Smith was the top runner for the men's squad, coming across the finish line in 24:19 to take third place. Julian DeRubira was close behind, finishing sixth with a time of 24:31. Waleed Totari also finished in the top-10, completing the 8k course in 24:46. All three of them earn All-Conference honors for their performances.
Cal Poly were the winners of the men's race, capturing their sixth straight team title. The Mustangs had 19 points, which was well ahead of the 71 points scored by second-place UC Davis. UC Riverside was third with 73 points, followed by the Gauchos with 79 points.
