Gauchos 4th, Nickless 7th at Prestigious Griak Invitational in Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The UC Santa Barbara women's cross country squad placed fourth Saturday at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. Senior Bethany Nickless paced the Gauchos with a seventh-place finish.

Minnesota won the Division I race with 97 points and was followed by Arizona State (90) and Michigan State (109). Santa Barbara was next in fourth place with 156 points.

Nickless, a Huntington Beach native, finished seventh with a time of 21:35 over the 6k course at the Les Bolstad Golf Course. Senior Megan Lewis was 12th with a time of 21:46.

The individual crown was won by Virginia's Emily Harrison, who finished with a time of 20:52. Iowa State took the next two spots with Lisa Koll second (21:09) and Grace Kemmey third (21:18).

Also competing for UCSB were Liza Hitchner (27th, 22:06), Danielle Domenichelli (40th, 22:26), Alyssa Brown (70th, 23:12), Breanne Strenkowski (97th, 23:42), and Ashley Ramirez (124th, 24:11).

UCSB won the Griak in 2006 as Stephanie Rothstein placed first and Lauren Christman was second. Rothstein was the first Gaucho to ever win the prestigious event.

Up next for the Gauchos are the Cal Poly Invitational and Pre-Nationals, which will be held in Terre Haute, Ind. Both events are scheduled for Oct. 13.
