SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Gillian Morgan has been named UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week after helping guide the Gaucho women's water polo team to an appearance in the inaugural Big West Conference Championships title game last weekend.
Morgan got the weekend rolling with a pair of goals in the Gauchos' 14-8 win over Pacific in the tournament's first round on Friday evening.
The next day, the Sacramento, Calif. native posted another pair of goals - including the game-winner - in a 6-5 sudden victory win over the tournament's No. 1 seed Cal State Northridge in the tourney's semifinals. The win allowed the Gauchos to advance to the title game on Sunday.
Morgan rounded out the tournament with a goal in the championship game - a 13-9 loss to UC Irvine.
The senior finished the year with a total of 83 goals, a new UCSB single season record. She finishes her four years at UCSB with a total of 205 goals, which ranks second all-time on the UCSB career-scoring list and makes her just the second Gaucho to surpass the 200-goal mark.
UCSB finished the season with a 17-12 record, an 11-win improvement from the 2008 season and its first winning season since 2005, when the Gauchos posted an identical record.
