This Week In Water Polo
The No. 13 UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team has a busy weekend ahead as it concludes its 2009 home schedule with its inaugural Big West Conference games against No. 11 UC Davis and Pacific in addition to hosting its annual Alumni Game. Sunday's game will also be "Senior Day" and the Gaucho seniors will be honored prior to the game.
For The Record
UCSB currently holds an 12-6 overall record and is 6-1 in games played at Campus Pool. The Gauchos have won eight of their last nine games including a 13-7 victory over Iona on Monday. UCSB is currently ranked 13th in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-20 Coaches Poll.
Senior Gillian Morgan has stretched her scoring streak to 17 consecutive games with a goal. The utility player posted three goals in the victory over Iona on Monday. For the season, she has 58 goals, surpassing her team-leading totals from her sophomore (49 goals) and junior (50 goals) seasons. She needs just three more goals to tie the UCSB single season scoring record, set by Kelley Tiffany in 2001. She is also tied with Katie Kepner as the team's assist leader with 13 helpers.
More On Morgan
In addition to leading the Gauchos, Gillian Morgan also leads the Big West Conference with her 3.22 goals per game average. If she keeps up her blistering pace, Morgan could surpass the UCSB career scoring record, which was set by Kelley Tiffany (1999-2002) at 213 goals. She currently ranks second all-time with 180.
Rouleau Keeps Rolling
Junior Lizzie Rouleau is also currently amidst a scoring streak. She has posted goals in the last eight games and currently ranks second on the team with 23 goals, which is one shy of her total from the 2008 season. Rouleau also ranks second on the team for earned penalties or ejections with 29 and had three vs. Iona.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Murphy tallied eight saves in three quarters against the Gaels earlier this week, including a blocked penalty shot. She currently leads the Gaucho goalies with an average of 8.2 saves per game. Fellow goalie Chelsea Carrillo is averaging 6.5 saves per game.
The Dirt On Davis
No. 11 UC Davis enters this weekend with a 17-7 overall record, which is tops currently amongst Big West teams. The Aggies are lead by Dakotah Mohr and Lindsay Kiyama, who average 1.59 and 1.41 goals per game, respectively. The two teams last played on Feb. 21 at the UC Irvine Invitational and the Aggies came out on top by way of a 10-6 score.
Taming The Tigers
Pacific enters this weekend with a 7-17 overall record and will play Cal State Northridge on Saturday before visiting the Gauchos. The Tigers are led by Dara Tawarahara, who averages 1.67 goals per game. The two teams faced off last on Apr. 25, 2008 at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament and the Gauchos came away with a 10-7 victory.
In its on-going effort to draw awareness to breast cancer and to promote its research, the UCSB Athletics Department is sponsoring "Pink Week" at its athletics events this week, including the two Gaucho water polo games. "Pink Week" is part UCSB Athletics' BE Great initiative.
On The Road Again
After wrapping their 2009 home stand, the Gauchos will hit the road for the remainder of the season. Next up for UCSB is a pair of games on April 4 in Northridge. Santa Barbara will play a conference game against Cal State Northridge at noon before facing nonconference opponent Cal Baptist in a neutral site game at 4 p.m.
