SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Freshman goalkeeper Ruth Milne earned her first Big West Player of the Week honor it was announced by the conference on Wednesday. Milne helped lead the Gauchos to a pair of upsets over the weekend at the UC Irvine Invitational as the Gauchos took 11th place at the 16-team tournament.
The Redwood City, Calif. native averaged 11 saves per game as UCSB went 2-2 at the tournament. The No. 12 Gauchos - who were ranked 14th nationally last week - knocked off then-ranked No. 13 San Diego State, 10-9, in sudden victory overtime and went on to beat Big West foe and then-ranked No. 11 UC Irvine, 11-3. Milne had 12 saves in each of those contests and also had a dozen blocks in a 9-3 loss to No. 4 UCLA.
She rounded out the weekend with eight saves in a 10-6 defeat to No. 9 Cal State Northridge.
Milne is averaging 10.9 saves per game this year and has posted 142 blocks so far. She averages 7.8 goals against.
This marked the first Big West Player of the Week honor for a Gaucho women's water polo player this season.
The Gauchos will return home this week to host a pair of non-conference contests. UCSB will welcome Fresno Pacific to Campus Pool on Thursday for a 6 p.m. pairing and will host No. 9 Loyola Marymount at noon on Sunday. Admission is free for both events.
