This Week In Water Polo
No.13 UC Santa Barbara will travel to Irvine, Calif. this Friday to face No. 10 UC Irvine for the second time this season. The Gauchos fell 10-5 in their last game against the Anteaters during the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. UC Irvine edged by UCSB to finish third place in the tournament. Both teams are amidst losing streaks and will be looking for a win this Friday. The Gauchos have lost their last three games and the Anteaters have lost their last two.
Shortly after this conference game, the Gauchos will participate in the UC Irvine Tournament this Saturday and Sunday. The Gauchos will open the tournament against No. 5 Cal on Saturday. Later in the day, UCSB will face either No. 12 Long Beach State or No. 4 Hawaii. Sunday's games are to be determined.
Gauchos Fall to 49ers, 10-6
What began as a close match-up last Saturday left the Gauchos with a third consecutive loss. In their first conference game of the season the Gauchos were outscored six to one in the third quarter. The Gauchos bounced back in the fourth quarter oustcoring the 49ers three to one. Gillian Morgan, Lindsay Knott, and Lizzie Rouleau each chipped in a goal during the last minutes of the game. Morgan led the Gauchos with two goals and senior goalie Jenny Gonzales finished with a total of five saves. The No. 13 ranked Gauchos now hold a 4-3 overall record.
Junior Gillian Morgan leads the Gauchos in scoring with a total of 19 goals, averaging 2.71 goals per game. Sophomore Christie Clark holds a total of 11 goals with an average of 1.57 goals per game. Senior Lindsay Knott has a seven game scoring streak with a total of ten goals Together these scoring leaders will build a strong offense for the Gauchos this season.
The Gauchos will hold their first home game of the season Saturday, March 1 against No. 1 UCLA. UCSB will continue to host two other top-ten teams the following week. Friday, March 7 UCSB will play No. 2 Stanford and Saturday, March 8 UCSB will play No. 7 San Jose State. The Gauchos have a very competitive schedule in the weeks to come.
