• This Week In Water Polo
After opening the 2009 season with a 2-1 record at the Cal Baptist Lancer Invite two weeks ago, the UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team returns to action this weekend when it heads south for the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The Gauchos are slated to begin conference action against Big West foe and No. 12 ranked Cal State Northridge on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. at the Triton's Canyonview Aquatic Center.

• For The Record
UCSB got 2009 off to a bit of a shaky start as they were upset by then-ranked No. 18 Cal State Bakersfiel, 13-9, during the first game of the Cal Baptist Lancer Incvite. The Gauchos rebounded and collected back-to-back wins over Cal State San Bernardino, 17-4, and Concordia, 13-5. Santa Barbara now holds a 2-1 overall record. With the loss to Bakersfield, the Gauchos were dropped from their preseason ranking of No. 17 to No. 20 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-20 Coaches Poll.

• Rouleau On A Roll
Junior center Lizzie Rouleau led the Gauchos during their season-opening tourney with eight goals across the three games. She posted one in the loss to the Roadrunners before tallying a hat trick against Cal State San Bernardino. In the final contest of the day, she tied her career-high of four goals in the win over Concordia. In addition to her eight goals, she also posted two steals and three earned penalties or ejections. The only other player to have scored in all three contests this season is sophomore Claire Buchanan, who tallied one goal in each game.

• A Morgan Moment
Senior Gillian Morgan, who led the Gauchos for goals in each of the past two seasons, posted four goals at the Lancer Invite, including a hat trick in the game against Concordia. She is currently tied with classmate Amanda Tipton with a team-leading five assists. Morgan, who currently ranks third on the Gaucho all-time career scoring list with 126 career goals, is just 26 goals shy of the number two spot on the list held by Jennifer D'Anna (2003-06), who collected 152 goals in the blue and gold.

• Hat Trick Happy
In addition to the aforementioned hat tricks by Lizzie Rouleau and Gillian Morgan, two additional Gauchos posted three-goal games in Riverside. Katlin Kubas posted three points in the win over Concordia and Alisha Khan had a team-leading three goals in the loss to Bakersfield.

• Goalie Gab
Sophomore goalkeepers Chelsea Carrillo and Kate Murphy each played one and a half games at the Lancer Invite. Carrillo earned the starting nod against Bakersfield and then played the second half against Concordia. She posted a total of eight saves during her six quarters for a 5.3 saves per game average. Murphy, who started against San Bernardino and Concordia, tallied 14 saves for a 9.3 saves per game average. She posted a career-high nine saves during the contest with San Bernardino.

• Matador Musings
No. 12 Cal State Northrdige enters this weekend's tournament with a 2-4 overall record. They have defeated Cal Baptist and Indiana, but suffered losses to former Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rivals Arizona State (twice), San Jose State and Cal. UCSB and CSUN faced off twice last season with the Matadors coming out on top during both contests. On Feb. 24, 2008, Northridge narrowly beat UCSB, 8-7, as Gillian Morgan led the team with four goals. The following victory for the Matadors was captured by a much more decisive 12-5 score. The last time UCSB posted a win over Northridge was during the 11th place game at the 2006 MPSF Championships (Apr. 28). The Gauchos won 8-5 and Morgan led the way with a hat trick.

• Coming Attractions
Following this weekend's tournament, the Gauchos will take a week off from action before heading to the UC Irvine Invitational on Feb. 21-22. The tournament's bracket has yet to be released.
