SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Tenth-seeded Long Beach State used a three-goal fourth quarter to claim an 8-6 victory over No. 12 seed UC Santa Barbara in the 11th-place game of the MPSF Championships on Sunday morning. The 49ers improve to 16-17, while the Gauchos fall to 6-21.
UCSB jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second period, but LBSU then stormed back with three goals to close out the half with a narrow 3-2 advantage. The 49ers opened the scoring in the third period to take a two-goal advantage before the Gauchos responded with three unanswered to reclaim the lead at 5-4. The Beach then scored with 2:41 left in the quarter to knot the score once again.
The two teams went back and forth in the final stanza until LBSU took the lead for good at the 2:27 mark. The 49ers added an insurance goal with 53 seconds remaining to secure the win and an 11th-place finish.
Cecilia Canetti and Lauren Sieprath each recorded a hat trick to pace The Beach. UCSB was led by Gillian Morgan and Linday Knott's two goals.
