No. 13 Gauchos Knock Off Chapman, 22-4

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 13 UC Santa Barbara closed off its mini tournament with a decisive win over nonconference opponent Chapman, 22-4. All six seniors scored and senior goalie Rosey Redaelli notched six saves in goal. The Gauchos improve to 15-19 overall with the win.

Senior center Sarah Kovach started off the scoring for Santa Barbara in the first quarter with two consecutive goals to give the Gauchos their first lead, 2-0. Senior defender Aimee Stachowski was up next with a skip shot and senior utility ZiZi Clark followed up with an unguarded shot to lift UCSB's lead to 4-0.Senior attackers Teale Walheim and Allie Carkin scored goals of their own. Chapman got on the board with one minute remaining with a goal from junior two-meter Ronda Cicchillo. Santa Barbara senior attacker Becca Maichrowicz scored seconds later to give the Gauchos a 7-1 first quarter lead.

Santa Barbara won the second stanza sprint and scored all of the quarter's goals. Carkin bounced a shot in and then Clark scored off an assist from Kovach. Carkin went one-on-one with the goalie before shooting the ball through with 4:40 remaining. Kovach followed with a goal a minute later and Walheim successfully capitalized on a five-meter penalty shot. Walheim scored her fourth goal of the game shortly after her penalty shot to bring the score to 13-1. Maichrowicz scored in the last seconds of the shot clock with an assist from Kovach and Walheim scored again with a skim shot with eight seconds remaining in the first half.

Sophomore utility Gillian Morgan scored first in the third period with a skip shot to put the Gauchos up 15, 16-1. Haley Slusser scored Chapman's second goal of the game with 6:03 remaining in the third quarter. Freshman attacker Kelley Fernbacher scored two consecutive goals for the goals for the Gauchos in the fifth minute of play, putting them up, 18-2. Chapman responded with a goal from freshman driver Kaitlyn Calhoun but Santa Barbara responded with a goal from freshman attacker Kimi Stephens.

UCSB freshman utility Christie Clark scored the first goal of the final period with an assist from Fernbacher to bring the score to 20-3. Chpman's freshman driver Brittney Koski scored shortly thereafter to cut its deficit to 16, 20-4. Kovach scored again for the Gauchos with an assist from ZiZi Clark with two minutes remaining and Fernbacher score the last gaol of the game with one minute remaining to put the final score at 22-4.

The Gauchos will travel to Tempe, Ariz. next weekend for the MPSF Tournament.
