April 21, 2007

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Santa Barbara dropped a hard fought contest to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team Cal State Northridge on Saturday at Campus Pool, 6-5. The teams tied the score twice and neither team led by more than two at any point in the match. The Gauchos drop to 14-19 overall and 2-10 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

The first quarter was very low scoring for both teams with neither team scoring until the sixth minute of play. UCSB sophomore utility Gillian Morgan scored off a skip shot on a fast break to give the Gauchos an early 1-0 lead.

Santa Barbara scored first again in the second stanza, 2.4 minutes into the quarter. Senior center Sarah Kovach scored on a skip shot with an assist from senior defender Aimee Stachowski. Kovach scored again less than a minute later with a shot that the CSUN goalie was not expecting and the Gauchos took a 3-0 lead.

The Matadors scored their first goal of the game with a shot from Northridge junior two-meter Christine Cruz that went over the head of UCSB goalie Jenny Gonzales. Next up, Northridge's junior two-meter Dayna Van Gorder went into the right corner to bring CSUN within one, 3-2. With two minutes to play, junior two-meter Allison Brookes took a powerful shot from five meters out to knot the score at three. Neither team was able to put a successful offensive together and the teams went into the halftime break tied at three.

It was déjà vu in the third period with another one-goal period. With 2:07 remaining in the period, Northridge's Van Gorder went around Gonzales to give CSUN its first lead of the game, 4-3. Despite a cumulative four ejections in the period, neither team was able to score and the Gauchos went into the fourth period down 4-3.

Santa Barbara won the fourth quarter spring behind junior attacker Lindsay Knott to begin the period. After another Gaucho had stolen the ball from the CSUN offense, freshman utility Christie Clark went on a fast break and went one-on-one with the goalie and scored to tie the game at four with roughly four minutes remaining in regulation.

It was Northridge's turn to score next off a skip-shot goal from Cruz 30 seconds later to return the lead to CSUN, 5-4. Cruz scored again for the Matadors three minutes later to distance themselves by two, 6-4. With just nine seconds remaining in the game, Morgan scored with a shot from seven meters to bring the Gauchos within one, 6-5. Santa Barbara was unable to score in the final moments and the Matadors won the MPSF game, 6-5.

The Gauchos will say goodbye to their seven seniors and play non-conference opponent Saturday afternoon against Chapman at Campus Pool at 4:15 p.m.
