No. 11 Loyola Marymount Defeats No. 18 UCSB, 14-6

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 18 UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team (13-11) suffered a 14-6 loss to No. 11 Loyola Marymount (22-7) in a nonconference pairing at the Lions' Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon.

The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead within the first four minutes of the first quarter before the Gauchos went on a run of three unanswered goals - two from Lizzie Rouleau and one from Gillian Morgan. With 29 seconds to go in the period, LMU's Casey Flacks posted a goal to stretch the Lion lead back to two points heading into the second half.

The teams each scored one in the second quarter and the Gauchos entered halftime still trailing by two at 6-4.

In the third, the Lions posted four consecutive goals during a two-minute span, including back-to-back points from Mary Ann Campos to push their lead to 10-4. Taylor Byrne scored the Gauchos' lone goal of the period with 10 seconds on the clock.

Katie Kepner scored the final UCSB goal of the game with 4:51 to play before the Lions tallied four straight to end the game with the 14-6 victory.

Sophomore goalie Chelsea Carrillo had five saves in the loss for UCSB.

The Gauchos will wrap up the 2009 regular season on Saturday with their final Big West Conference game at No. 16 Long Beach State at noon and a nonconference neutral site contest with Sonoma State at 2 p.m.
