SAN JOSE, Calif. -
No. 12 UC Santa Barbara put a stop to its four-game losing skid with a 9-4 defeat of No. 18 Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon. Six different Gauchos scored in the victory. The Gauchos improve to 14-16 overall with the win while the Broncos drop to 17-12 on the season.
"We played a really good game," UCSB Head Coach Danielle Altman said. "We attacked right away.
Santa Barbara scored on its first possession with a goal from sophomore defender Amanda Tipton. Tipton. Sophomore utility Gillian Morgan scored on UCSB's second position to give the Gauchos an early 2-0 lead.
Santa Clara scored shortly thereafter to bring the score to 2-1. Santa Barbara outscored Santa Clara to take the game 9-4. Tipton contribued a team-high three goals while senior center Sarah Kovach was nipping her heals with two. Freshman attacker Taylor Byrne, Morgan, freshman center Lizzie Rouleau and freshman attacker Lauren Walker each scored once for the Gauchos. Junior goalie Jenny Gonzales had eight saves between the posts.
"We shot really well," Altman said. "We had really nice shots from the outside and we took some really good shots in our six-on-five situations."
Santa Barbara's weekend finishes up Sunday with a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game against No. 1 Stanford at 12 p.m.
