April 5, 2007

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 11 Loyola Marymount outscored No. 12 UC Santa Barbara for most of Wednesday afternoon's match at Campus Pool to earn the 9-7 win. LMU player Stacia Peterson led all scorers with four goals while Christie Clark led the UCSB with two. The Gauchos fall to 13-14 with the loss while the Lions improve to 18-5 with the victory.

The Gauchos won the first sprint of the game behind junior attacker Lindsey Knott and got on the board first as well. UCSB sophomore utility Gillian Morgan scored her first goal of the game 1.5 minutes into the first period. LMU sophomore driver Nicole Hughes had Loyola Marymount's first goal to tie the score at one.

"We played hard, it was an overall team effort," UCSB Head Coach Danielle Altman said. "We're going to keep plugging away [this week], trying to get better. We're hoping to improve our reaction time and work on our defensive counter."

The Lions had an opportunity to score on a five-meter penalty shot but UCSB junior goalie Jenny Gonzales blocked the shot. The Lions scored the last goal of the first period off a look from senior utility Cara Colton, brining the score to 2-1 in favor of LMU.

Santa Barbara opened the second stanza with a goal from senior utility ZiZi Clark less than a minute into play. The Lions capitalized on a six-on-five opportunity to score off a goal from senior two-meter Dora Szabolcsi. In turn, UCSB sophomore defender Amanda Tipton took advantage of a power play to score and tie the score at three.

With 20 seconds remaining before intermission, LMU senior utility Katie Hicks Fletcher scored off a shot that floated into the cage to give the Lions a 4-3 lead heading into the break.

Loyola Marymount scored the first goal of the second half when senior utility Stacia Peterson's went around Gonzales to put one through, increasing LMU's lead to two, 5-3. On the next drive, UCSB senior center Sarah Kovach's shot went past the attempted block from goalie Kaylee Caster to bring the Gauchos within one, 5-4.

After Kovach's goal two minutes into the third period, superb defense on both ends of the pool kept either team from scoring until there was 1:40 left to play. LMU sophomore driver Nicole Hughes's shot went through UCSB's block to bring the score to 6-4 in favor of the Lions. Loyola Marymount followed that up with a goal that went into the left corner of the cage to extended its lead to three at the end of three periods of play, 7-4.

For the fourth quarter in a row, Santa Barbara won the sprint and got on the board first in the fourth period. Freshman utility Christie Clark scored a goal from seven meters out to cut LMU's lead by one. The Lions responded 19 seconds later with a goal from Peterson to bring the score to 8-5.

Clark scored again for the Gauchos with 5:13 left in regulation with a skip shot from well beyond the five-meter mark. The Lions converted a six-on-five opportunity to extend their lead to three again with a skip shot from Peterson. With 3:31 remaining Morgan took a powerful shot on goal to bring Loyola Marymount's lead to two, 9-7. Morgan's goal would be the last of the game with neither team being able to score any goals in the remaining minutes and the Lions took the win, 9-7.

Jenny Gonzales notched six saves between the posts while Caster had 12.

"Jenny's block on the five-meter shot was big," Altman said. "She did a really great job today."

The Gauchos return to play Tuesday, April 10 against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent Hawaii at 4 p.m. at Santa Barbara's Campus Pool.
