April 4, 2007

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 17 Long Beach State outscored the No. 12 Gauchos in two periods to defeat UCSB on Wednesday at Santa Barbara's Campus Pool, 8-7. The teams tied the conference match-up five times but the Beach's strong fourth quarter helped it to victory and to break the team's seven-game losing streak. The Gauchos fall to 13-13 overall and 2-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while Long Beach improves to 7-12 and 3-5 in the MPSF.

The Gauchos won the sprint to begin the game but the Beach got on the board first within the first minute with a goal from Dayna Wawrzynski. Roughly a minute later, Long Beach scored again, this time off a goal from Ashley Heaslip, to give it a 2-0 advantage. UCSB sophomore utility Gillian Morgan scored with a lob shot to bring the Gauchos into the game and the score to 2-1. Freshman attacker Taylor Byrne tied the score at two with a skip shot that went past LBSU goalie Kim Hayes. Christina Wensman scored for the Beach to return the lead back to her team, 3-2. Morgan scored her second goal of the game with 12 seconds remaining in the first period to tie the game.

Neither team scored until the four minute of play in the second stanza. Senior defender Aimee Stachowski stole the ball from the 49er offense and cut off a defender to put the ball in the back of the net and given the Gauchos their first lead of the game. The Beach responded 20 seconds later with a lob-shot goal from Heaslip, which brought the score to 4-4. Marina Cannetti scored back-to-back goals for the 49ers off a UCSB turnover and an outside shot to extend Long Beach's lead to two, 6-4. Morgan brought the Gauchos within one with 12 seconds remaining before intermission off a fast-break assist from freshman center Lizzie Rouleau.

Morgan tied the game with her fourth goal of the game to open the second half and tie the game at six. Sophomore defender Amanda Tipton converted a six-on-five to give the Gauchos a lead. The third period would see three more ejections before its conclusions with no other goals and the teams entered the final period with Santa Barbara leading, 7-6.

The Beach's Megan Winchell opened the fourth quarter with a goal to knot the score at seven. Morgan had an opportunity to return the lead to the Gauchos but Hayes blocked Morgan's five-meter penalty skip shot. Long Beach's Wensmen scored the game-winner off a five-meter shot to bring the score to 8-7. Despite taking three timeouts, the Gauchos were unable to mount a successful offensive campaign and they dropped the game, 8-7.

Santa Barbara is back in the waters tomorrow at 3 p.m. when it plays Loyola Marymount at Campus Pool.
