No. 5 San Diego State Defeats No. 12 UC Santa Barbara at ASU Invitational

TEMPE, ARIZ. - No. 5 San Diego State used a three-goal first period to gain an early advantage over No. 12 UC Santa Barbara. Despite the Gauchos tying the game at six in the final period, the Aztecs came away with the win, 7-6 on Sunday at Arizona State's Invitational. The Gauchos drop to 12-12 overall.

The Gauchos won the sprint and scored the first goal of the game when sophomore defender Amanda Tipton scored. The Aztecs converted a 5M penalty shot to tie the game at one 22 seconds after Tipton's goal. After her successful penalty shot, San Diego State player Stacy Werner scored another goal to give the Aztecs a 2-1 advantage with 4.43 remaining in the first quarter. SDSU capitalized on a power play opportunity to put two goals between it and UCSB, 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.

The Aztecs opened the second period with another six-on-five goal, bringing their lead to 4-1. Next it was Santa Barbara's turn to score on a man advantage when sophomore defender Katlin Kubas scored her first goal of the game at the 3.44 mark. Neither team scored until senior utility ZiZi Clark scored to bring the Gauchos within one, 4-3, at the end of the first half.

The Gauchos won the first sprint after intermission and scored the first goal less than a minute into the period on a six-on-five shot from senior defender Aimee Stachowski, which tied the game at four. Santa Barbara earned its first lead since the first two minutes of the game off a goal from sophomore utility Gillian Morgan. The Aztecs caught up with the Gauchos with another man-advantage goal to knot the score at five.

With the teams tied at five to begin the four quarter, San Diego State scored the first goal roughly four minutes into the final period. The Gauchos added a goal off a shot from ZiZi Clark to even the score at six all. The Aztecs drew an ejection and converted the opportunity to score the game-winning goal. The Gauchos failed to score in the final 1.5 minutes of play and the Aztecs won the game, 7-6.

Santa Barbara junior goalie Jenny Gonzales had seven saves in goal. The Gauchos will play No. 18 Michigan on Sunday afternoon for the third place match at the ASU tournament in Tempe, Ariz.
