No. 12 UC Santa Barbara took its first game of Saturday 9-7 against Division III opponent Redlands at the Arizona State Invitational. The Gauchos improve to 12-10 overall and will take on No. 11 Arizona State on Saturday afternoon.
The Gauchos opened up with a goal less than 30 seconds into the match with a goal from sophomore utility Gillian Morgan. Redlands responded with a goal 32 seconds later to tie the score and proceeded to go on a 2-0 run to bring the score to 3-1 in its favor. Senior defender Aimee Stachowski scored a goal for UCSB with 2:38 to shorten the deficit to one, 2-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Neither team scored in the second stanza until there was 2.44 left in the half when Redlands extended its lead with a goal. The Gauchos reacted with two straight goals. Stachowski scored on a 5M penalty shot at 1.41 and senior utility ZiZi Clark put one through with eight seconds remaining in the half to bring the score to four all.
Santa Barbara took its second lead of the game 1.10 minutes into the second half when Stachowski scored her third goal of the game. Redlands tied the game at five before senior center Sarah Kovach put one between the posts to return the lead to UCSB, 6-5. With just four seconds left in the third period, Redlands scored again to knot the score at six.
The Gauchos won their fourth sprint of the game to open the fourth period. Freshman utility Christie Clark scored UCSB's first of three fourth-quarter goals to give Santa Barbara the lead, 7-6. Redlands scored what would be its last goal of the game with 5.46 remaining in the game. Morgan scored two more goals to put distance between Redlands and UCSB to take the win, 9-7.
Morgan and Stachowski both netted hat tricks for UCSB while Alie Hower scored a game-high four goals for Redlands. Rosey Redaelli notched five saves in goals for the Gauchos. Santa Barbara plays again Saturday afternoon against No. 11 Arizona State.
