LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Loyola Marymount women's water polo team extended its winning streak to seven games Friday afternoon with a thrilling 8-7 win over No. 8 UC Santa Barbara at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center.
With 2:01 remaining in the final frame, LMU junior Cara Colton scored from about four-meters out on the right for the game winner, breaking a 7-7 tie. The Lions improve to 16-3 on the season while UCSB goes to 12-12.
The Lions trailed 2-1 after the first frame but managed to tie it at 3-3 going into the break. LMU then broke out with three straight goals - one from Hicks and two from Colton - to start the third frame to take a 6-3 lead.
UCSB and Alaina Whitaker battled back as her two goals made it 6-5 with 34 seconds remaining. Junior Dora Szabolcsi answered to give LMU the two-goal lead with just 22 seconds in the period.
Trailing by two entering the fourth, Whitaker scored back-to-back goals, the final coming with 3:19 remaining, to tie the game before Colton's eventual game-winner. Whitaker scored all four of the Gaucho's second half goals and finished with five for the game, increasing her total to 33 on the season.
Colton and junior Katie Hicks scored three goal each as the Lions continued to battle injuries and illnesses. Flu forced Head Coach John Loughran to change the line-up once again as sophomore and second leading scorer Christine Robinson was forced to sit with the flu. She joined All-Americans Stacia Peterson (back) and Rachel Riddell (elbow) on the sidelines.
UCSB resumes Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play on Saturday, April 1 at Long Beach State. First splash is slated for 12:00 p.m.
