HONOLULU - After seeing its potential game-tying penalty shot blocked in the final minute Tuesday, the 15th-ranked UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team fell 9-7 to No. 15 Hartwick at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
With their loss, the Gauchos fell to 12-11 overall, while the Hawks upped their record to 17-7.
Hartwick held an 8-7 lead with a minute left in regulation, when goalie Olivia Colebourne stopped a UCSB penalty shot to preserve the lead. Meghan Dahl-Smith tallied her third goal of the game at the buzzer to provide the final winning margin.
Santa Barbara opened up an early 3-1 lead when Jen D'Anna rattled the back of the cage with 1:44 left in the first quarter before the Hawks pulled ahead 5-4 just before halftime.
The Gauchos re-took the lead at 6-5 on Gillian Morgan's goal at the 5:39 mark of the third period, but Hartwick tallied two unanswered scores and would not trail again.
Upon returning from Hawai'i the Gauchos will remain on the road for a Friday, March 31 showdown with Loyola Marymount. First splash is slated for 12:00 p.m. at the Burns Recreation Center Pool.
