LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 3 USC women's water polo team posted a 17-6 win over No. 18 UC Santa Barbara Friday evening at the Trojan's McDonald's Swim Center. The loss drops the Gauchos to 4-14 on the season and 0-8 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation games, USC improves to 13-5 overall and 6-1 in the MPSF.
USC's Forel Davies opened the scoring in the first quarter when she scored during a six-on-five possession. The Trojans then extended their lead to 2-0 on a cross-cage skip shot from Veronika Bartunkova, but UCSB cut the lead to just one point to head into the second quarter trailing 2-1.
In the beginning of the second frame, USC stretched its lead to 4-1 before Christie Clark scored the first of her three goals during a six-on-five power play. Unfortunately for the Gauchos, the Trojans posted three more points, two from Bartunkova, to extend their lead to 7-2.
Katie Kepner slipped a lob shot in for UCSB, but USC had the last word in the quarter to hold an 8-3 advantage heading into halftime.
An early goal by Clark at the beginning of the third was followed by another three-goal run by the Trojans. Kepner's second goal of the day momentarily stopped the USC onslaught, but the Trojan's would pour in six more goals before time expired at the end of the game. UCSB scored just once in the final frame: a six-on-four goal from Clark. USC finished the game with the 17-6 victory.
The Gauchos will continue MPSF action next Saturday, April 5 when they host Arizona State at noon.
