Honolulu, Hawaii - UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team fell 11-5 against fifth ranked Hawaii today at University of Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center, in Honolulu. Gillian Morgan and Christie Clark led the Gauchos offensively, each scoring two goals. Freshmen goalie, Kate Murphy had a standout performance finishing with five saves all in the fourth quarter. Senior Jenny Gonzales also finished with a game total of four saves.
Morgan started off the Gaucho's offense with a goal in the first quarter. At the end of the first, the Rainbows led by one (2-1), but were quick to increase their lead in the second and third quarters. Hawaii outscored UCSB in the second quarter three to one and in the third quarter four to two.
At the start of the fourth, UCSB was down (9-4). In a collective defensive effort, Gaucho goalies Murphy and Gonzales held Hawaii to just two goals in the final quarter. Murphy had an outstanding five saves in the fourth quarter while Gonzales added one. Morgan chipped in a final goal for the Gauchos. The game ended with an 11-5 Hawaii victory.
The Gauchos currently hold a 4-13 overall record, and are 0-7 in Mountain Sports Pacific Federation. After a week long break, the Gauchos will resume play Friday, March 28 against No. 1 University of California, Los Angeles. The contest will be held at the UCLA's McDonald's Swim Stadium at 5:00 pm.
