LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
The second-ranked UCLA women's water team handily defeated the visiting No. 12 UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team Sunday at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, 21-8. The Gauchos fall to 10-10 overall and 1-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with the loss while the Bruins improved to 15-1 overall, and 7-0 in MPSF play.
The Gauchos struck first on a lob shot from sophomore utility Gillian Morgan less than a minute into the game. The Bruins responded with seven unanswered goals to close out the first quarter with a 7-1 lead.
Bruins Molly Cahill and Katie Rulon both scored twice in the first to help the Bruins build an insurmountable lead. UCLA continued its scoring rampage in the second quarter, adding on five goals to take a 12-2 lead into halftime. Between the second and third quarters, the team scored 12 unanswered goals to take a commanding 19-2 lead.
Jenny Gonzalez had six saves for the Gauchos. Emily Feher made four saves and allowed only three goals before leaving at the end of the third quarter.
The Gauchos travel to Tempe, Ariz. to take on conference team Arizona State and participate in the Sun Devils' tournament March 30-April 1.
