No. 12 Santa Barbara Picks Up Pair of Wins at Mini Tourney
March 10, 2007
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team recovered from its morning loss to No. 9 San Diego State to defeat No. 15 UC San Diego 5-3 and Claremont 16-4 in its final two games of this weekend's Mini Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Fourteen different Gauchos scored in the tournament closer against the Athenas at Campus Pool.
With the wins, the Santa Barbara season record is lifted to 10-9 overall and the Gauchos finish their mini tournament with a 3-1 mark.
Against the Tritons, senior Aimee Stachowski opened up the scoring with a quick shot only fifteen seconds into the game to put the Gauchos up 1-0. The two teams' defenses battled until Katlin Kubas broke through with 5:57 left in the second quarter, scoring on a backhand out of center. Kubas drew a five-meter penalty a little over a minute later, but the Gauchos failed to convert the shot to continue holding just a 2-0 advantage. The Tritons faced the same stroke of bad luck at the end of the quarter as junior goalie Jenny Gonzales knocked down a five-meter penalty shot to preserve the UCSB two-point lead heading into halftime.
Stachowski opened the second half much like she did the first with a skip shot in the first minute of play to stretch the Gaucho edge to 3-0. UC San Diego finally was able to penetrate the Gaucho defense when Lauren Woods scored a bar-in goal and then with only 42 seconds left in the quarter, the Tritons drew a second five-meter and this time they found the back of the net with a penalty goal from Sarah Bajorek cutting the UCSB lead to one point at 3-2.
Freshman Christie Clark opened the fourth quarter with a backhand goal but the Tritons fired back with a power play goal from Natalie Hockett to once again cut the UCSB lead to one. A second goal from Clark with 1:16 left in the game topped the Gauchos off as they took the 5-3 win, their second of the season over the Tritons.
Jenny Gonzales tallied an impressive 10 saves in the match-up while Kim Hockett had 11 for the Tritons.
In the third game of the day, Claremont opened up the scoring with a goal from Kristin Orkney during its first possession. The Gauchos were not silent for long, however, as senior Sarah Kovach scored a backhand out of center during UCSB's next possession. Amanda Tipton and Lindsay Knott followed suit as they both scored on a pair of fast-break counter attacks to put the Gauchos up 3-1.
Orkney struck again with a power play goal with 2:06 on the clock cutting the UCSB edge to one point, but exactly a minute later Gillian Morgan responded with a goal of her own and ZiZi Clark rounded out the first quarter scoring with a skip shot stretching the Santa Barbara lead to 5-2.
Kari Keach continued the Gaucho onslaught early in the second when she stole the ball, swam it down the pool and then lobbed it over the Athena goalies' head. Lauren Walker then found Allie Carkin on the post during a power play to convert the Gauchos' seventh goal.
Leading 7-2 heading into the second half, UCSB found the back of the cage five more times in the third quarter with goals coming from five different sources including two five-meter penalty goals scored by Emily Friedmann and Becca Maichrowicz.
Claremont scored two more goals in the fourth quarter, but the Gauchos added five of their own to finish the game with the 16-4 victory. Taylor Byrne and Walker led UCSB with two goals apiece.
UC Santa Barbara will continue its very busy weekend tomorrow when they head south to take on Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foe, No. 2 UCLA at 1 p.m.
