No. 12 Gauchos Recover from First Quarter Deficit to Defeat Marist, 7-5

March 9, 2007

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Seven consecutive goals by the Gauchos lifted the No. 12 UC Santa Barbara water polo team over visiting Marist 7-5 on Friday afternoon in a non-conference match-up at Campus Pool. Senior Sarah Kovach and sophomore Gillian Morgan each scored a pair of goals leading Santa Barbara in the win.

With the victory, the UCSB record is lifted to 8-8 overall while the Red Foxes fall to 9-8 on the season.

Each team struggled in the opening minutes of the game until Marist found the back of the cage first with a goal from Maggie Hatcher with 4:08 on the clock. Fellow Red Foxes Kristen Barnett and Samantha Swartz followed suit as they each scored on power play possessions to gain a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

UCSB fired back in the second as they notched three consecutive goals coming from Morgan, Christie Clark and Amanda Tipton to tie the score at 3-3 with a little over three minutes left in the half. Freshman Alisha Khan converted a five-meter penalty shot to grab the first Gaucho lead of the game. UCSB went into halftime with a narrow 4-3 advantage.

The Gaucho scoring rally continued in the third quarter when less than a minute into the period, Kovach fired in a shot out of center. Both teams seemed to cool for a bit before Morgan grabbed her second point of the game right in front of the cage to push the Gaucho lead to 6-3. Kovach rounded out the quarter with her second goal of the game with only 13 seconds on the clock.

Trailing 7-3, Marist was able to shut down the Gaucho offense once again in the fourth quarter and goals from Katelin McCahill and another from Barnett brought the Red Foxes within two, but the late surge was not enough as UCSB took the game at 7-5.

Starting goalkeepers Elizabeth Davis of Marist and Jenny Gonzales each recorded five saves while Rosey Redaelli tallied four in the latter half of the game.

The Gauchos will be in action again tomorrow at the UCSB Mini Tournament being hosted at Campus Pool. Santa Barbara will face Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foe No. 9 San Diego State in a conference match-up and round out the day with games against No. 17 UC San Diego and Claremont. Redlands will also be participating in the tourney.
