BERKELEY, Calif. -
The No. 4-ranked California women's water polo team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 10-7, at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Gauchos claimed the match's first goal after sophomore utility Gillian Morgan found the back of the net at the 5:27 mark. Cal quickly responded as freshman Julie Oreglia scored the equalizer at 4:25.
UCSB opened the second stanza with a pair of goals from junior attacker Lindsay Knott and senior attacker Allie Carkin to take a 3-1 lead. The Bears rallied behind a freshman Darby Anderson goal (5:32) and Reynolds (3:10) to tie the score once again. California took the lead, 4-3, after junior Molly Hayes rifled one past the goal keeper at the 1:29 mark. Cal squeaked one last goal in before the half courtesy of junior Vanessa Lindsey's strike with 37 seconds remaining, giving the Bears a 5-3 advantage.
UC Santa Barbara staged a rally to open the third period, scoring two goals from sophomore defender Amanda Tipton and another from Morgan to tie the score at 5-5 at the 5:22 mark. The teams then traded goals to knot the score at six. With the score tied, Cal scored three unanswered goals to put the game out of reach by the end of the third frame, bringing the score to 9-6.
Both the Bears and the Gauchos tallied a goal in the final period of action but it was not enough and the Bears took the game, 10-7.
