No. 8 San Diego State Uses Early Lead to Defeat No. 12 Gauchos, 8-5

Irvine, Calif. - No. 8 San Diego State scored three first-quarter goals to give it an early advantage which No. 12 UC Santa Barbara was never able to come. The Aztecs' two fourth-quarter goals sealed the victory, 8-5 in the teams' third game at the Irvine Invitational. The Gauchos fall to 6-5 while San Diego State improves to 6-3.

The Aztecs capitalized on an early five-on-six opportunity to score less than 30 seconds into the game. San Diego State followed with two more goals to put themselves up 3-0 with 2:24 remaining in the first period. UCSB scored its first goal of the game with 1:31 to play in the quarter to bring the score to 3-1.

San Diego State struck first again in the second period, putting three goals between it and Santa Barbara. The Gauchos scored again, and 30 seconds later sophomore defender Amanda Tipton put one through to bring UCSB within one, 4-3. Greenwood scored for the Aztecs with 37 seconds left in the half to give SDSU a 5-3 lead going into the halftime break.

Neither team scored in the third period until the 1:44 mark when San Diego scored after UCSB sophomore defender Katlin Kubas was ejected to give the Aztecs a brief man advantage. The Gauchos responded later that minute with a goal to bring the score to 6-4 in favor of San Diego State.

The Gauchos started the scoring the fourth quarter with a goal from Tipton to put Santa Barbara one goal behind San Diego State, 6-5. The Aztecs put distance between themselves and the Gauchos with two more goals to end the game with the 8-5 win.

Junior goalkeeper Jenny Gonzales notched 10 saves in goal for the Gauchos.

The Gauchos will take on Arizona State for 11th place in the tournament.
