No. 11 UCSB Stymied By No. 14 UC Davis, 6-5

Feb. 24, 2006

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After taking a 4-1 lead, the UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team was shut down and UC Davis came from behind to win 6-5 in a non-conference match Friday at Campus Pool.

The eleventh-ranked Gauchos (5-6 overall, 0-3 MPSF) got on the scoreboard first on a goal by junior attacker Allie Carkin with 3:42 remaining in the first quarter. Davis (7-4 overall, 4-0 WWPA) responded with the equalizer two minutes later when Casie Mota found the net.

Santa Barbara reclaimed the lead at 2-1 after ZiZi Clark's goal with just over a minute to play in the first period. The Gauchos increased their advantage to 4-1 in the second quarter on goals by seniors Alaina Whitaker and Jen D'Anna.

The Aggies turned it on after that, scoring four goals in the final 4:13 of the first half--including two scores by Katherine O'Rourke--to take a 5-4 advantage into the locker room.

Defense was the name of the game in the second half, as both squads missed numerous opportunities at the net for most of the third quarter. Mota finally found the back of the goal with four seconds remaining in the period, giving UC Davis 6-4 lead heading into the fourth.

UCSB battled back in the final period with a goal at the 2:50 mark to climb within one, 6-5. The Gauchos had several opportunities in the waning minutes of the match, but failed to capitalize. Aggie goalkeeper Lina Moore made several key saves down the stretch to preserve the 6-5 win for Davis. She finished with 13.

The Gauchos are back in action this weekend, when they host the Gaucho Invitational this weekend with matches being played at both Campus Pool and the Recreation Center Pool all day on Saturday and Sunday.
