Santa Barbara, Calif. -
Four Gauchos had multi-goal games to push Santa Barbara to a 16-10 win over visiting Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon at Campus Pool. Santa Barbara improves to 5-3 overall with the victory while the Coyotes fall to 2-5.
UCSB started the match off well, winning the first quarter sprint. With a great open look at the goal, senior defender Aimee Stachowski scored Santa Barbara's first goal of the game less than a minute into play. The Gauchos posted three more goals -- one from freshman utility Christie Clark on a fast break and two from senior center Sarah Kovach -- before the Coyotes were able to tally their first goal. Senior attacker Teale Walheim added a goal for the Gauchos before junior driver Sabrina Marquez scored for CSUSB to bring the score to 5-2. Senior attacker Allie Carkin scored for the Gauchos with one second remaining in the first period to push Santa Barbara ahead of San Bernardino 6-2 at the end of the quarter.
Christie Clark won the sprint for the Gauchos to open the second period and the Gauchos followed that with a goal from freshman attacker Alisha Khan. The Coyotes responded with a goal from Freyja Berg at the 6:33 mark. The score remained 7-3 for the next 4.5 minutes before either team scored again when CSUSB's Abby Rich netted a goal with two minutes remaining in the half. Gaucho junior attacker Lindsay Knott scored back-to-back goals to finish out the second period and give the Gauchos a 9-4 advantage heading into the break.
Santa Barbara opened the second half with a 3-0 scoring run with goals from sophomore defender Amanda Tipton, Christie Clark and Morgan. Both the Coyotes and the Gauchos each tallied a goal before the end of the period, bringing the score to 12-5 in favor of UCSB.
San Bernardino scored twice to open the fourth quarter before the Gauchos struck back with two goals of their own from Christie Clark. The Coyotes returning the favor, scoring three unanswered goals. However, UCSB's early lead proved too much and the Gauchos took the game 16-10.
The Gauchos play on the road next weekend, traveling to UC Irvine for the Irvine Tournament.
