San Diego, Calif. -
After defeating Santa Clara 9-7 and losing to San Diego State 8-7 in the first day of UC San Diego's Triton Invitational, the No. 16 Gauchos opened the second day of play with a 7-4 win over Michigan.
Santa Barbara was the only team to post a goal in the first quarter when freshman utility Christie Clark put one through two minutes into the game. Michigan scored its only goal of the first half when Leah Robertson converted on a counterattack to knot the score at one. The Gauchos scored two uncontested goals from sophomore Katlin Kubas and senior center Sarah Kovach to enter the halftime break up 3-1.
UCSB continued its scoring ways with a 2-0 run to open up the third period. Sophomore defender Amanda Tipton scored at the beginning of the quarter and sophomore utility Gillian Morgan put one through at the 5:34 mark. The Wolverines capitalized on a power play to bring themselves with one with 4:08 remaining in the period.
Well-matched defense kept either team from scoring until the fourth period when Julie Hyrne scored on a six-on-five to bring the score to 5-3. Kovach netted her second of the game and senior utility ZiZi Clark scored for UCSB to extend Santa Barbara's lead to 7-3. After taking a timeout, the Wolverines scored their final goal of the game but with 1:12 left in the game, it was too late and the Gauchos won the match 7-4.
