Gauchos Go 1-1 in Day 1 of Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. - No. 14 UC Santa Barbara (5-4) finished the opening day of the UCSD Triton Invitational with a record of 1-1. The Gauchos defeated No. 16 Indiana (1-4) 10-9 in second overtime, before falling to No. 11 UC Irvine (3-1) 7-6, in another second overtime match, at UCSD's Canyon View Aquatic Center.
The Gaucho's first game of the day, against Indiana, proved to be an exciting contest. At the end of the first quarter, the score was an even 3-3. The Hoosiers outscored UCSB four goals to two during the second and third, leaving the Gauchos down 7-5 going in to the fourth quarter. However, in the final period, UCSB rallied, posting three goals to tie the game at 8-8. In the first overtime, the teams matched each other with a goal apiece. In second overtime, the winning goal came from junior Claire Buchanan, propelling UCSB to a 7-6 victory.
On Saturday evening, UCSB played another close game, but came up just a little short in the end against UC Irvine. After the first half of play, UCSB led the contest 5-3. The Anteaters fired back in the second half, scoring one goal in the third and two in the fourth, while the Gauchos remained stagnant. Trailing 6-5, UCSB answered back in the nick of time, with the tying goal coming from Christie Clark, on a five-meter penalty shot with just .6 seconds on the clock. The first overtime period was a stalemate, in which both teams failed to score. In second overtime, the Gauchos were unable to match an Anteater goal, resulting in a narrow 7-6 defeat. The Gaucho's will resume tournament play Sunday at 9:50 am, against No. 15 UC Davis.
