"We did a really good job of shooting the ball and basically showing mental toughness," UCSB Head Coach Danielle Altman said. "We were down and got back in the first quarter.
Later that afternoon, UCSB took on No. 15 Hartwick to close out the tournament. With 2:15 left in the final period, UC Santa Barbara had cut Hartwick's lead to 6-5. Marina Zablith stole the ball from the Gauchos with seven seconds to play in the match to preserve the victory. ZiZi Clark led UCSB's offense with two goals against the Hawks. The Gauchos fall to 1-1 with the Hartwick loss.
"The Hartwick game was interesting, we played a really solid game and definitely did some great things," Altman said. "Hartwick just capitalized on every little opportunity we gave them and we had some great scoring opportunities and we could put the ball in the goal. I thought it was a very good game to start the season."
The Gauchos travel south again next weekend for the UC San Diego Invitational.
