After three seasons as the assistant coach for the UCSB women's water polo program, Cathy Neushul was appointed the head coach in October of 2011.
In her first season at the helm of the program, she guided UCSB to a 20-15 overall record, marking the first 20-win season for the program since 1997. Additionally, she coached goalkeeper Ruth Milne to All-American accoalades.
Neushul joined the UCSB coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2008-09 season. During her first three seasons with the Gauchos, she helped guide the Gauchos to a 51-37 record and two consecutive No. 15 final national rankings (2009 and 2010).
In addition to her coaching duties at UCSB, Neushul has also served as head coach with Santa Barbara Water Polo Club since 2005. With SBWPC, she has led her teams to 20 USA Water Polo National Championship appearances and eight national titles.
Prior to her head coaching position with one of the nations' top club programs, she served as a youth water polo coach for SBWPC from 2000-05. In 2005, she was named the Coastal Zone Women's Development Coach of the Year.
Neushul has a long history with Gaucho water polo. She was an All-American while playing for UCSB in the 80's, before the program became a varsity sport. In 1986 she was a member of the United States National Team. Neushul served as a player and coach for UCSB from 1986-89 and then became the head coach of the Gauchos from 1991-92. She also spent time as the head coach of the La Habra High School water polo and swim teams, Hawai'i Kai youth water polo team and the Montecito YMCA swim team.
Before re-joining the Gaucho water polo family, Neushul was employed by UCSB as a physical therapist from 2003-07. Prior to her tenure at UCSB, she spent 10 years as a physical therapist at Santa Barbara/Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital.
She is a certified USA Water Polo Coach at the silver level and is also a certified USA Water Polo referee.
Neushul graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1985 with a double B.S. degree in physiology and psychology. She earned a Masters of physical therapy from USC in 1991.
She is married to former UCSB water polo player Peter Neushul, a two-time All-American for the Gauchos. They have three children: Kiley, Jamie and Ryan.
