HONOLULU, Hawaii – Jade Wentz-Fitzgerald's two goals were not enough in No. 14 UCSB's 7-3 loss at No. 6 Hawaii on Saturday night.
The Gauchos are now 12-14 on the season with a 1-2 mark in conference, while the Rainbow Wahine improve to 13-7 overall and 2-1 in Big West play.
Wentz-Fitzgerald paced UCSB with a pair of goals, as Brenna Thomas was the first Gaucho to score early in the second quarter. Defensively, the team combined for six steals with Mackenzie Brokaw recording one of them along with making eight saves in goal.
With a steal and an assist, Taylor Shore increased her team-leading figures in both categories to 25 swipes and 13 helpers.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the match with two goals in the first quarter. To start, Chloe Barr scored one of her two goals on a power play at the 4:38 mark, while Caity Lopes Da Silva followed her with a penalty shot with 2:12 left in the period.
After just 90 seconds went by in the second quarter, Brenna Thomas netted UCSB's first goal of the match when she rifled her shot past Hawaii goalkeeper Ymane Hage.
The Rainbow Wahine responded with three unanswered goals in taking a 5-1 lead at the 2:36 mark in the third quarter. Just before the end of the quarter, Wentz-Fitzgerald registered her first goal of the night to bring the Gauchos within three.
Hawaii solidified its lead with two more goals to open the fourth quarter, but Wentz-Fitzgerald notched in the final goal with 51 ticks left in the game.
