UCSB Splits Pair on First Day of Cal Lutheran Tournament

Thousand Oaks, Calif. The No. 15 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos took on University of Michigan and Fresno Pacific on the first day on the Cal Lutheran Tournament. 

UCSB started the first day of the Cal Lutheran Tournament with a matchup against No. 16 Michigan. Both teams had great defense in the first quarter. Leading the team for the Gauchos in the first quarter were Junior Lauren Martin and Sophomore Bryn Hudson each scoring a goal leaving it 2-1 going into the second quarter. Michigan were able to score two more at the beginning of the second quarter, while Freshman Taylor Shore and Sophomore Samantha Murphy both got a shot off for the Gauchos before the half. 

Michigan picked it up going into the third quarter by scoring three four goals, but were quickly answered back by Sophomore Jessie Porter and Freshman Carly Christian. Going into the the fourth quarter the Gauchos picked up the pace, having Lauren Martin, Jessie Porter, and Carly Christian all score again for the Gauchos, leading the team into overtime. Scoring machine Jessie Porter was able to score one more for the Gauchos, while Sophomore goalie Mackenzie Brokaw played an amazing two quarters of overtime. In the end, the Gauchos were unable to defeat the Wolverine's, concluding the game with a tough 11-10 loss. 

Coming off their earlier game, the Gauchos faced off against Fresno Pacific. UCSB came out strong with one goal from Bryn Hudson and another from Taylor Shore. Entering the second quarter, the Gauchos unleashed the offensive attack, counting two goals from Sophomore Mackenzie Baber, along with single goals scored by Bryn hudson, Jessie Porter, Sophemore Holly Smith and Junior Claryann Olofsson-Loo.

Entering the third quarter Sophomore Miranda Schrader started the Gauchos off with a goal. Top scorers of the day, Bryn Hudson, Taylor Shore, and Mackenzie Baber also answered with a goal a piece. Freshman goalie Devon Gasparini entered the game for the Gauchos, and concluded the third quarter with a shut out. Fresno Pacific was able to answer back with three goals, but were left short while Miranda Schrader and Freshman Casey Pond were able to get a goal a piece, ending the game with a 14-4 win for the Gauchos. 

UC Santa Barbara faces Chapman University Saturday morning at 9:15am at the Samuelson Aquatics Center and will conclude the tournament with a game against Villanova at 10:30am.
