UCSB Splits Pair On First Day of UCI Invite

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 16 UC Santa Barbara (5-8) split its matches on the first day of the UCI Invite. The Gauchos fell to No. 4 Cal (12-1) before defeating No. 14 UC Davis (8-9).

The first game of the day started off slow, as Cal took the lead 3-0 after the first quarter. The Bears were able to get three more goals in during the second quarter. Freshman Brenna Thomas was able to skip a shot past the goalie at the buzzer to end the first half 6-1. 

Sophomore Samantha Murphy opened the second half with a quick goal. Cal was able to score two more goals before sophomore Miranda Schrader and freshman Jenna Solberg snuck in two of their own. The third quarter ended with the Bears leading 9-3. Freshman Carly Christian scored the lone goal of the fourth quarter for UCSB to end the game 10-4.

UCSB was ready to take on No. 14 UC Davis for their second game of the day. Samantha Murphy opened the game with a goal to take an early lead. Sophomore Jessie Porter answered with a goal of her own to make it 2-0. Brenna Thomas ended the quarter with yet another buzzer beater to make it 3-1. Freshman Megan Linder and Jessie Porter contributed to two more goals to end the first half with the Gauchos up 5-4.

With her third goal of the game, Jessie Porter converted a shot off of a penalty. The Aggies were able to tie the game 6-6 with two minutes left in the third quarter. Both teams scored one more goal to keep the game tied 7-7 going into the fourth quarter. Jessie Porter recorded three more goals, helping the Gauchos to lead by one. Jenna Solberg ended the game with another goal for the Gauchos, leading to their 11-9 victory over the Aggies.

UC Santa Barbara takes on No. 8 Loyola Marymount at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning at Corona Del Mar. The Gauchos second game depends on their results from their morning game.
