This Week In Water Polo
The UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team will head to UC Irvine to participate in the UC Irvine Invitational, their second away tournament of the season. No. 18 UC Santa Barbara will face No. 4 UC Berkeley at 10:30am on Saturday, February 22. The rest of the tournament matches depend on their previous games.
Last Time On The Road Two weekends ago, the Gauchos participated in the UC San Diego Triton Invite. UCSB opened the tournament falling short to No. 11 Loyola Marymount, then end the first day with a win over Marist. They took on tough competition the next day, with a loss to UC Davis followed by an exciting win over No. 8 SDSU. They ended the tournament with a 2-4 overall record.
New Season, New Team
With a new group of fifteen very talented freshmen, the Gauchos have shown that young doesn't always matter when it comes to the sport of water polo. Junior and team-captain Lauren Martin exclaimed, "This season we have a very young team but I think that just makes us stronger. We still have a lot to learn but we definitely have the potential to do very well this season and I am looking forward to see what the future holds for the team." So far the Gauchos have marked their territory as a young college team and are continuing to grow and win as a team.
The Tally of Top Scorers
With this new team, the Gauchos have a group of scoring machines to watch out for. Freshmen Carly Christian and Taylor Shore, and Brenna Thomas are among the two leading scorers for the Gauchos so far this season. Sophomore's Samantha Murphy, Jessie Porter, and Bryn Hudson are also top scorers leading the Gaucho's. As the teams main 2-meter player, Lauren Martin has put plenty of goals on the board so far this season.
Following the Irvine Invitational, the Gauchos will travel to the Cal Lutheran Invite from Friday, February 28 to Saturday, March 1. Go Gauchos.
