No. 18 UCSB Splits First Day of Triton Invite

LA JOLLA, Calif - The Gauchos suffered a tight loss to No. 11 Loyola Marymount 10-7, and came back at the end of the day to earn a 10-4 win against Marist. 

LMU too the lead in the first quarter with two goals but was soon to be stopped by Freshman Sophie Trabucco, putting the Gauchos on the score board making it 3-1 at the end of the first quarter. As the second quarter began, the Lions responded with a goal right off the bat. Sophomore Samantha Murphy responded with a goal off of a power play putting another goal on the board for the Gauchos. The Lions were able to take the lead, scoring three more goals, ending the first half 7-2. 

The third quarter flew by with the Lions scoring two goals, and Freshman Taylor Shore scoring a goal with only 17 seconds to go, making the score 9-3 going into the fourth quarter. 

Sophomore Jessie Porter led the Gauchos in the fourth quarter, scoring three consistent goals. The Gaucho's defense was on fire, only letting in one more goal by the Lions. Freshman Brenna Thomas was able to put one more goal in for the Gauchos, before falling short to LMU 10-7. 

With the loss behind them, the Gauchos were ready to bring it to Marist in their second game of the day. Sophomore Bryn Hudson started off the game with a goal for the Gauchos. UCSB took this lead and concluded the first quarter with a shut out for Marist, making it 1-0 going into the second quarter. 

Marist began the second quarter with a goal, but one of the many the freshman on fire, Taylor Shore quickly fired back with her second goal of the day. Shore started the pace for the quarter, and followed with a goal a piece for Freshman Jenna Solberg and Freshman Carly Christian. Sophomore Holly Smith ended the quarter with another goal for the Gauchos, leaving it 5-1 at the half. 

Bryn Hudson started the third quarter off with her second goal of the game, and was followed by Brenna Thomas scoring one more for the Gauchos. Marist was able to put one more on the score board by the end of the third quarter. The momentum of the game was continued again by Bryn Hudson, as she score two more goals at the beginning of the fourth quarter, making that a total four goals for this game. Senior Jade Wentz Fitzgerald scored the last goal for the Gauchos of the day. Marist was able to put up two more goals onto their score, but were unable to defeat the Gauchos, ending the game 10-4. 

UCSB will face UC Davis tomorrow at 12:00pm on the second day of the Triton Invite.
