No. 15 UCSB Comes Back for Close Win at No. 14 LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif.Coming off a weekend where No. 15 UC Santa Barbara (13-7, 1-0) defeated the No. 13 UC Davis Aggies, 8-7, the Gauchos traveled to No. 14 Loyola Marymount (9-7) looking to obtain a two game winning streak. UCSB did just that as they came from behind once again to close out the Lions by the score of 10-9.

UC Santa Barbara started off in a sluggish way as the team conceded four goals to the Lions. The lone goal in the opening period for the Gauchos came from senior Rachel Nelson.

The second period kicked off fast for UCSB as freshman Samantha Murphy scored a quick 6:58 goal for the Gauchos. With a late 6-on-5 goal from Jessie Porter, the Gauchos cut into the Lion's lead as the score at the half was 5-3.

UC Santa Barbara continued to press in the second half as they continued to produce goals. For much of the third period, the deficit remained at two goals as both teams were answering each other offensively. The turning point occurred with three seconds left in the period as Murphy scored her third goal of the match making the score 7-6.

The fourth period proved to be a nail biter as both teams were playing with a new level of intensity. LMU scored first in the period, but Samantha Murphy quickly answered back with her fourth goal of the game. With 3:39 remaining, UCSB finally tied the game, 9-9, with a 6-on-5 goal by Rachel Nelson. Coming down to the wire, LMU committed a crucial penalty, creating a five meter shot for the Gauchos. Freshman Jessie Porter kept her composure and netted the score, lifting UCSB to a thrilling 10-9 victory.

Freshman Samantha Murphy led the attack for UCSB with four goals while fellow freshman, Jessie Porter, tallied three goals of her own. Senior Rachel Nelson scored two while Bryn Hudson added one goal.

Senior All Big West goalkeeper Ruth Milne was the leader for the defense as she recorded five saves.
