Shelby Haroldson

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 13 UC Santa Barbara women's water polo (9-3) split its two games on Saturday at the UCSD Triton Invite, which were held at Triton Pool. The Gauchos dominated Cal State Bakersfield (1-7), 11-3, before suffering a tough loss to No. 6 UC Irvine (6-2), 14-10.

The Gauchos continued their winning streak, as UCSB took on Cal State Bakersfield in their first game of the day. CSU Bakersfield opened the game with a goal within a minute. Senior Kacey Creek quickly responded a minute later, scoring the Gauchos first goal. Fired up, freshman Samantha Murphy and sophomore Jade Wentz Fitzgerald each scored a goal, enabling the Gauchos to take an early lead of 3-1. The Gauchos never looked back, and ultimately cruised to an 11-3 win over CSU Bakersfield.

Coming off their earlier victory over CSU Bakersfield, the Gauchos faced No. 6 UC Irvine later in the evening. UCSB started the game fired up, with Samantha Murphy getting the first goal of the game after only 30 seconds. From there, the Anteaters quickly responded with two goals shortly after. Freshman Mackenzie Brokaw kept the Anteaters to a one-goal lead at the quarter, with UCI up 4-3.

The Gauchos were unable to score in the second quarter, allowing the Anteaters to gain a 9-3 lead at half.

Looking to make a furious comeback in the second half, UCSB was searching for a quick turnaround in the third period. With the only goal coming from senior Shelby Haroldson, the Gauchos were faced with an 11-4 deficit heading into the final period.

UCSB gained late momentum as they came out pushing in the fourth period. With the help of two goals apiece by Jessie Porter and Bryn Hudson, UCSB made the final parts of the game interesting. Despite the effort, the Gauchos fell to the Anteaters by the final score of 14-10.

With four goals apiece, freshmen Samantha Murphy, Bryn Hudson and Jessie Porter led the Gauchos' offense in the first day of the Triton Invite. Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Brokaw is continuing to impress in goal, playing for the injured Ruth Milne, as she recorded six saves in today's matches.

UC Santa Barbara will start off its second day tomorrow as they face No. 19 UC San Diego tomorrow, Sunday, February 10 at 9:50 a.m. at the Triton Pool.
