UC Santa Barbara Defeats Sonoma State, Falls to No. 5 Arizona State

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After going undefeated in its first three matches of the 2013 Winter Invite, No. 15 UC Santa Barbara (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season in an anticipated showdown against No. 5 Arizona State (4-0). Opening its second day of the tournament with a win over Sonoma State, UCSB just fell short in defeating the Sun Devils.

In their contest against the Sonoma State Seawolves (2-1), UCSB never faced a deficit as they led the entire match. After going up, 4-1, after the first period, the Gauchos never looked back as they maintained their lead, and ultimately cruised to a 10-5 victory.

Coming off their earlier victory over Sonoma State, UCSB faced a difficult task of defeating the talented No. 5 Arizona State squad.

After the opening goal from Samantha Murphy, Arizona State took the 2-1 lead with one of the goals being a five-meter shot. The Gauchos got their own five-meter opportunity, and tied the match 2-2. The game remained close as the Sun Devils carried a slim 7-5 lead into halftime.

UCSB cut the deficit into one goal thanks to a 1:48 goal by senior Shelby Haroldson. Arizona State took the momentum away from UCSB as they scored a late goal with three seconds remaining in the third period.

The Gauchos could not get any closer to cutting the Sun Devil's lead as they were held without a goal in the final period. Despite the well played match, UC Santa Barbara suffered its first loss of the season as it fell to Arizona State, 10-7.

Freshmen Jessie Porter, Samantha Murphy and Bryn Hudson led the offense today with three goals apiece. Continuously being a force in goal, Ruth Milne led the defense with a total of 11 saves, with nine during the game against Arizona State.
