What Lies Ahead for the Gauchos
No. 14 UC Santa Barbara will have two games in this upcoming week. Both of the games will take place at UCSB's home, Campus Pool. On Sunday the Gauchos will face No. 2 Stanford at 1 pm. They will play again on Monday against Brown at 3 pm.
Week in Review
The Gauchos went undefeated last week, playing three matches at home. In the double header the Wednesday before last, they defeated Iona 7-6 earlier in the afternoon, and crushed Bucknell 14-4 later that day. This past Sunday they cranked out a win against Harvard, 10-9.
On the Record
Continuing UCSB's winning streak, they came out of the week with a 14-10 record. This positive record moved them up two spots in the Collegiate Water Polo Association rankings, putting the Gauchos at number 14.
A Force to Be Reckoned With
Junior Katie Zakula was the leading scorer for UCSB in these past three games. Zakula scored a hat trick in both of the Wednesday games, and scored two in the game against Bucknell. Zakula has been on a scoring spree, and has scored at least one goal in the past five games for UCSB. She has a total of 19 goals, and the number keeps rising as the season progresses.
The younger Gauchos had an impressive outing in UCSB's past three games. Freshman Bernadette Bevins scored four of the 14 goals in the game against Bucknell, which was her highest number of goals in one game for the Gauchos. Freshman Frankie Puerzer scored her first Gaucho goals in the game against Bucknell, when she sunk two into the opponents net contributing to UCSB's win.
Following the Leaders
Still leading the Gauchos in goals scored is Junior Bryce Winton and sophomore Molly Hafferkamp. Winton has scored a total of 27 goals for UCSB, and Hafferkamp is following right behind her with 26 goals. Junior Shelby Haroldson predominantly leads the team with 41 assists and 40 steals.
Coming Up For UCSB Women's Water Polo
The Gauchos will play again next Sunday when they face Long Beach State (8-11) on Saturday, March 31, and No. 6 UC Irvine (17-5) on Sunday, April 1.
