Fantastic news for the Gauchos as they moved up five spots in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Poll and are now number 10 for the first time in awhile. The last time the Gauchos were this close they were ranked No. 11 on March 10, 2010. They now have a record of 10-9.
Last Time Out
UCSB had a successful outing down south in Irvine, Calif. at the UCI Invitational. The Gauchos suffered two tough losses to No. 4 Cal in the late morning on Saturday, 7-3, and again on Sunday against the then-ranked No. 7 UC Irvine, 11-5. On a lighter note the Gauchos had two huge upsets. The first was against then-ranked No. 13 UC Davis, 10-9. Secondly, and more notably, UCSB played then-ranked No. 8 San Jose State for the second time this season, suffering a loss the first time, and came out with a win, 9-8. The Gauchos placed 10th in the tournament.
Goalie Topping the Competition
Junior Ruth Milne had another great outing this weekend. She had 19 saves against Cal (the second highest this season), and a total of 52 saves over the course of the past weekend. She has made 219 saves this season, and continues to heighten her record-breaking career saves.
Freshman Lauren Martin scored the highest goals in one game this past weekend, in the Gauchos' huge upset against San Jose State. She scored four goals, and is in the top-five highest scorers for the Gauchos with 18 goals.
Junior Shelby Haroldson scored the most goals for UCSB this past weekend. She had the team high of six goals overall. She was definitely a deciding factor in the win against UC Davis, when she scored a hat trick. She remains the team leader in assists and steals with 35 and 31, respectively.
Juniors Bryce Winton and Rachel Nelson were also key to the Gaucho offense this past weekend. They both scored the second highest number of goals of the weekend with four each. Winton still leads the Gauchos as lead scorer with 24 goals.
What's Coming Next
The Gauchos finally head home next Sunday, March 11, when they play Harvard (7-2) at 12 pm at Campus Pool.
