The Weekend Ahead
After having a short break this weekend, No. 16 UCSB heads down to La Jolla, Calif. for UC San Diego's annual Triton Invitational. The Gauchos begin their play at the tournament at 12 pm, at Triton Pool against their host, No. 17 UC San Diego. Depending on the results of the match, they will play No. 6 Arizona State or Cal State Bakersfield at either 1:50 pm or 3:10 pm again at Triton Pool later Saturday afternoon. The rest of the tournament is conducted in bracket style.
The Battle Field
The Triton Invitational will consist of 16 teams this weekend. Of these 16 teams, 11 are ranked in the top-20 in the CWPA Poll. The tournament will host some teams that are familiar to the Gauchos, including No. 20 Cal State Northridge and Sonoma State, who they defeated at the UCSB Winter Invite. UCSB will also be sharing a bracket with No. 9 Indiana and No. 6 Arizona State, which it suffered losses against earlier this season. The Gauchos placed ninth in last year's Triton Invitational.
Two weekends ago, UCSB opened its home season and played six games over the course of three days. Out of the three days, UCSB posted four dramatic wins over Concordia, Sonoma State, CSUN and Cal State Bakersfield, letting no team come within four goals of it. Although it was a great weekend for the Gauchos, they accumulated two losses, one against ASU and a close one to Indiana in overtime.
On the Record
UCSB is heading to the Triton Invitational with an overall record of 6-5. This week, the Gauchos moved up a spot in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Poll and are now ranked No. 16.
Goalie on Fire
Junior goalie Ruth Milne was once again named Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Week on February 1, 2012. Milne had an incredible home opening weekend posting at least nine saves in all six games. She continues to heighten UCSB's career saves record as she came out of the weekend with a season total of 126 saves. Milne also posted a career-high of 22 saves against CSUN at the UCSB Invite.
Juniors Bryce Winton, Kacey Creek and Shelby Haroldson are dominating the Gaucho offense this season. Winton has posted the team high of 19 goals, and scored 12 of them during the home opening weekend. She scored goals in all but one game that weekend, and scored five out of the Gauchos' 10 goals in the win over Sonoma, a single game career-high for her. Creek also had a strong weekend by scoring seven goals for UCSB. Creek follows close behind Winton in with 15 goals. Haroldson is dramatically leading the team in assists with a total of 20 this season. She is the only player posting in double digits.
Freshman Lauren Martin has been a force to be reckoned with for the Gauchos this season. She posted nine goals the Gauchos' last weekend out and has the third most goals on the team with a total of 11.
What's Coming Up
After this weekend the Gauchos return down south to Irvine, Calif. for the UCI Invitational on February 25-26, 2012.
