SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – No. 17 UC Santa Barbara split its two games on the second and final day of the UCSB Winter Invite, which was held at Campus Pool. The Gauchos (7-4) dominated Cal State Bakersfield (1-3), 11-4, before suffering a tough overtime loss to No. 9 Indiana (5-2), 8-6.
The Gaucho winning streak continued as UCSB took on Cal State Bakersfield in their first game of the day. Fired up, junior Shelby Haroldson scored the first goal of the game within the first minute.
After the Roadrunners scored their first goal, UCSB responded with back-to-back goals in the last minute, one by junior Rachel Nelson and the second by Haroldson, enabling the Gauchos to take a strong and early lead of 3-1.
The Roadrunners snuck in the first goal of the second quarter, but that was not going to bring the Gauchos down. Freshman Lauren Martin accumulated a hat trick, when she scored three of Santa Barbara's four goals during the second quarter. Senior Elle Quane scored the other goal for the Gauchos, widening the gap between UCSB and CSUB, 7-2, at halftime.
Only one goal was scored by CSUB in the third quarter, due to yet another spectacular outing for junior Ruth Milne, and the Gaucho defense. Junior Bryce Winton scored the only other goal of the quarter, putting the Gauchos ahead 8-3, but she was not done quite yet.
With the Gauchos up by five, Winton scored the first two goals of the last quarter getting the second hat trick of the game. After allowing just one more goal by CSUB, Quane scored midway through the fourth quarter, and the Gaucho defense took care of it from there. The Gauchos continued their winning streak as they took the win, 11-4.
The Gauchos took on Indiana later in the evening. The defense of both teams was incredible with no score on the board until the last minute and a half of the first quarter. Junior Katie Zakula scored the first goal of the game with only a minute and seven seconds left. The Hoosiers responded with a goal immediately after, leaving the quarter with a tied match, 1-1.
After the teams tirelessly blocked shots on both ends of the pool, the Hoosiers sunk the only goal of the second quarter into the back of the Gaucho net. Exiting the half, the Gauchos trailed behind, 2-1.
After a long, exhausting first half, the Gauchos were ecstatic when junior Kacey Creek threw one past the Indiana goalie, tying the game. The Hoosiers snuck two more goals that quarter into the back of the net, but the Gauchos retaliated with another goal by Creek. The Gauchos trailed by one at the end of the third quarter, 4-3.
The fourth quarter is where both teams turned on the heat. The first goal of the period came when Winton scored a goal on a penalty shot in the first minute of the quarter, tying the game. Nelson trailed right behind Winton with back-to-back goals, giving the Gauchos with their first lead of the game, 6-4. Indiana scored consecutive goals, including a game-tying strike with 52 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
The Hoosiers scored a goal in each of the overtime periods and the Gauchos failed to respond, losing the match, 8-6.
The Gauchos can be seen back in action when they travel to La Jolla, Calif. to play in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Feb. 11-12.
