UC Santa Barbara Takes Down Western Michigan For Second Win of the Day

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team picked up its second win of the day with a 30-26, 30-28, 28-30, 30-25 victory over Western Michigan Friday evening at the Baden Thanksgiving Classic in Long Beach, Calif.

With the win, the Gauchos extend their current win streak to five straight matches and end the regular season with a 19-11 overall record and the Broncos fell to 20-14.

Junior Brett Quirarte led UCSB in the win with a career-high 25 kills on 37 attempts with two errors for a .622 hitting percentage. The Long Beach, Calif. native also had three blocks, one solo and one assisted. Senior Jamie Garbisch posted her second double-double of the day with 18 kills and 15 digs and also added three service aces. Senior Olivia Waldowski was also solid for the Gauchos tallying 17 kills and a team-high four blocks (one solo, three assisted).

Freshman Stephanie Brandt handed out a career-high 73 assists in the win, the most helpers recorded in a match by a Gaucho since rally scoring format was implemented in 2001. The setter also had a team-high 16 digs and tied Garbisch with a match-high three aces.

The Broncos were led by Ashley Vogl who tallied 21 kills, posted a .409 clip and collected a match-high six block assists. Setter Jenifer Sulewski had 61 assists and Caitlin Strimel picked up 28 digs for Western Michigan.

Game one saw eight tied scores and four lead changes and the Gauchos were able to outhit the Broncos .273 to .235 to take the 30-26 win. The second frame proved to be a little harder fought as the teams fought through 15 ties and six lead changes with UCSB taking the 2-0 advantage into the locker rooms with a 30-28 win.

The Broncos were not willing to go down easy and prevailed through a match-high 17 ties and outhit UCSB .459 to .370 to take the game at 30-28. UCSB displayed its best hitting of the evening in the fourth frame as they collectively hit .395 helping seal the match win with the most decisive game victory at 30-25.

Tonight's match marked the end of the Gauchos' regular season schedule and the team will now have to wait until the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament selection show to see if they have received an at-large bid into the 64-team first round. The selection show will air on ESPN News Sunday, Nov. 26 at 12 p.m. PST.
