SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's volleyball team captured its second win in a week over UC Santa Barbara Friday evening in the Gauchos' Thunderdome. The Anteaters posted a 30-26, 30-28, 30-26 sweep of UCSB.
With the loss, UCSB falls to 10-18 on the season and 5-10 in Big West matches. The Gauchos are just 2-5 in the Thunderdome this season. UC Irvine improves to 21-9 overall and 11-4 in the Big West.
Freshman outside hitter Rebecca Saraceno led UCSB with 12 kills, two aces, six digs and three block assists in the match. Junior outside Lauren McLaughlin had nine kills and eight digs while middle blocker Brett Quirarte tallied seven kills and four block assists.
Kari Pestolesi led the Anteaters with 17 kills and 12 digs. Lauren Kellerman had 13 kills, an ace and six digs. Chelsea Ellis hit an impressive .769 (10k, 0e, 13a) and also had three block assists. Libero Devon Sutherland tallied 22 digs while setter Taryn Robertson had 45 assists.
McLaughlin opened game one with a kill, but the Anteaters quickly climbed to an early 8-4 lead. The Gauchos went on a 4-0 run fueled by a pair of service aces from Saraceno to tie the game up at 8-8. UCSB was able to gain a 13-10 lead and carried the advantage through the middle of the frame before the Anteaters once again tied the game at 18-18 behind the serving of Pestolesi.
Seven tied scores ensued, but a kill from Ellis followed by a Gaucho attack error put Irvine ahead 27-25. The Gauchos would score just once more before three straight points earned UCI the 30-26 game one victory. The Anteaters outhit UCSB .261 to .093 in the frame and Kellerman led the attack with six kills.
UC Irvine struck first in game two with a kill from Pestolesi. After breaking a 5-5 tie, the Anteaters controlled the board for the majority of the frame. Trailing 25-20, UCSB posted a 5-0 run to tie the game, but a Gaucho service error allowed Irvine to regain the advantage. A kill from Robertson brought the Anteaters to match point but Saraceno responded to cut the lead to 29-29 before Pestolesi hammered a kill to capture the 30-28 win for Irvine.
Irvine jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third frame and led by as many as nine points at 22-13. UCSB attempted to inch its way back into the game, but UCI reached game point with a kill from Shannon Homan at 29-20. The Gauchos proved they still had some fight left in them as they went on a six-point run that was highlighted by three kills from Saraceno. Homan finally put a stop to the Gaucho onslaught with a kill and sealed the match victory for Irvine with a 30-26 game three victory. The Anteaters hit a match-best .359 in the third frame versus the Gauchos' collective .167 clip.
The Gauchos will play their final home match of the season Saturday evening against conference foe UC Riverside. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. and UCSB seniors Quirarte and Lauren Smith will be honored prior to first serve.
