RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team swept Big West Conference foe UC Riverside for the second time this season by a score of 30-27, 30-17, 30-18, Friday evening in the Highlanders' Student Recreation Center. Senior Jamie Garbisch led the Gauchos with a match-high 18 kills on the evening.
With the win the Gaucho record is lifted to 14-10 overall and 6-5 in the Big West while the Highlanders fall to 2-21 and 0-10 in conference play. Friday's victory extends UCSB's perfect record against Riverside to 18-0.
Garbisch posted her 18 kills on 37 attempts with only two errors for a .432 hitting percentage on the night. The Anaheim, Calif. native also posted eight digs on the evening. Senior middle blocker Olivia Waldowski was the only other Gaucho to reach double-digit kills with 11 on 23 attempts and four errors for a .304 clip while also posting four assisted blocks.
Junior Brett Quirarte posted an impressive .500 clip on the evening with her nine kills on 14 attempts with two errors. Freshman Stephanie Brandt collected a double-double on the evening with 40 assists and 10 digs, she also put away three kills. Senior Emily Hendrickson led UCSB with 12 digs and Rebecca Saraceno had a team-high six blocks (five assisted, one solo).
Ashley Halperin was the only Highlander to put up double-digit kills with 11 on the night and Riverside's lone service ace. Brittney Murrey had 30 assists and Amanda Nilsson had a match-high 16 digs.
The Gauchos climbed out to an early lead in game one before the Highlanders chipped away and tied things up at 8-8. A UCSB 5-0 run ensued and though Riverside remained within reach for the remainder of the match, the Gauchos were able to capture the 30-27 win.
Frame two saw seven tied scores and three lead changes early on, but with the score tied 9-9, the Gauchos used an 8-1 run to capture the first substantial lead of the game. UCSB saw its best hitting of the night as they combined for a .469 clip versus Riverside's .135, and took the game with a final score of 30-17.
The third game belonged to UCSB as only two early ties were allowed before the Gauchps gained the upper hand and eventually took the 30-18 win.
UCSB continues road play against on Saturday, Nov. 4 with a match against Big West foe Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. in Titan Gymnasium.
